Let us support Yamaguchi Korean School!    ~to connect into the future~

 

□ About the project

We are a school support team established in collaboration with the teachers and alumni of Yamaguchi Korean Elementary and Intermediate School, and the citizen group “Yamaguchi Citizen Network for Korean Schools.''

   

It has been 10 years since Yamaguchi Prefecture and other local governments suspended subsidies, and with the recent coronavirus pandemic, the amount of donations from volunteers has decreased, and school finances have become increasingly difficult year by year. We have decided to take on READYFOR's "continuous donation" challenge in order to receive support from alumni and other supporters both domestically and internationally.

   

Korean School is a school attended by Korean children and students living in Japan who have roots on the Korean Peninsula.

 

 

Yamaguchi Korean Elementary and Intermediate School is the only Korean school in Yamaguchi Prefecture with a history of over 60 years, and many of its graduates work within the prefecture and contribute to the local community. Shimonoseki, where our school is located, has flourished as a gateway from the Korean Peninsula to Honshu, main island of Japan since ancient times, and has a history of exchange with Korea, with the Bakan Festival, the region's largest festival, holding an event called "Korean Diplomatic Delegation to Japan (Chosen Tsushinshi)."

 

 

Yamaguchi Korean Elementary and Intermediate School will celebrate its 70th anniversary in three years. We want to make this project a success so that we can maintain stable school management that will lead to our 70th and 80th anniversaries.

□ Yamaguchi Korean Elementary and Intermediate School

Yamaguchi Korean Elementary and Intermediate School is the only Korean school in Yamaguchi Prefecture. Yamaguchi Korean Elementary and Intermediate School currently operates with an extremely small number of students: 6 kindergarten students, 16 elementary school students, 3 intermediate students, 9 teachers, and 4 staff/lecturers.

 

Our school is a small Korean school, but there are about 60 Korean schools across Japan.

Isn't it wonderful that we have 60 sister schools across the country?

 

The Korean Schools are attended by Korean children living in Japan who have roots on the Korean Peninsula. They come from a variety of nationalities, including Korean, Chosenseki, and Japanese.

    

At Korean schools, children born and raised in Japan are taught the language, culture, and history of their ethnic group, and while firmly nurturing their ethnic identity, they also provide language education (Korean, Japanese, and English) and science such as mathematics and science. We are focusing on education, learning the geography and history of Japan and the world, and developing human resources who can act as a bridge between Japan and the Korean Peninsula.

 

 

In 2021, Yamaguchi Korean Elementary and Intermediate School, with the help of READYFOR, attempted crowdfunding for the first time in order to create an educational environment where children can learn without any inconvenience, and then received support from many people. Thanks to them, we were able to install air conditioners in each classroom and repair the gymnasium and the leaks of the school building.

 

It was also a great asset to be able to connect with many domestic and international supporters, alumni, past teachers, and people involved in Korean schools across the country.

□ The current situation of Korean Schools.

Do you know the free high school education system? It came into effect in 2010, but in February 2013, Korean high schools were excluded due to a notification from the then Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. The day after receiving this notification, our school had its “Private Foreign School Special Subsidy”, which had been provided since 1995, discontinued. Korean schools are the first to be affected by politics and the international situation.

　  

10 years have passed since then, and the citizen group “Yamaguchi Prefecture Network Supporting Korean Schools” has been campaigning to have the subsidy reinstated, but the subsidy has still not been reinstated.

    

Therefore, we have no choice but to operate the school solely on operating fees paid by parents and donations from volunteers, and these donations have decreased due to the spread of coronavirus infection, making school management under constant stress.

We want to connect Yamaguchi's ethnic education to the future for 70 and 80 years.
